3 House Mews Development, Dublin 6
This project was to replace a warehouse with 3 houses on a narrow, 15 m wide, mews lane site. Although the site was narrow, it was very long, which allowed a deep plan. The main concerns of height and density were overcome with careful design of the front elevations and a multi-level plan. The central stairwells with large rooflights at the top enabled light to penetrate the plan. In addition bathrooms and utility spaces were placed off the staircase in the centre of the plan, placing living and sleeping accomodation to the front and rear with maximum width and glazing.
This scheme won the Opus Architectural award for Housing 2006 The judges commented as follows:
“A 15 metre wide garage site now supports three family houses whose deep plan has been creatively manipulated in cross section to give a variety of appropriate and light-filled spaces. What appears on plan to be pragmatic and workaday is found on a site visit to be an insightful interrogation of workaday realities and urban renewal.”
